Siren Trucks!!!

Ola has always been our "audio" child, meaning that he's all about sound. He loves being read to and loves listening to music, and...he is pretty good at identify things simply by their sound. The things he's best at identifying are his favorite vehicles, the trash truck and the "siren trucks". By siren truck, he simply means any vehicle that has a siren on it, including police cars, ambulance, and firetrucks. A few months ago, Aho came home during his shift and realized that Ola had never seen his car. He always sees Daddy in uniform, but doesn't know that when he goes to work he drives a "siren car". However, because he works midnights, getting Ola down to see Daddy in his car would be a little difficult. So, I thought of the next best thing. A friend and dorm-mate of mine from high school married one of our other classmates who ended up being a fireman, so I called to see if they'd be willing to let us take a field trip out to his station. Our "field trip" group consisted of my fabulous friend Kyra and her adorable daughter Leeya, myself, Kupa'a, Waiola, and our fireman KC (who was taking the picture).
Ola got his own fire safety coloring book and fireman helmet (which he wore around the house every day the following week...until it was too broken to play with anymore). Since Ola was still warming up (he fell asleep on the way, so he was a little groggy for a while), we checked out the outside of the firetruck first. Uncle KC showed him the equipment, the different compartments on the side, and even let him climb around on the back of the truck. Fearless Leeya had to be the first one to jump into the truck, while Ola watched from a distance.

He eventually woke up enough and made it into the fire truck with Uncle KC. He got to honk the horn, push some buttons, turn on the lights and siren, and even take it for a drive around the block. The Kahuku Station also houses a water truck. Ola got SO excited when Uncle KC turned on those lights. He also got to talk in to the headset to say "Hi Mommy!". When Uncle KC asked him if he wanted to play with the water hose, my boy went straight to what he knows best.

And then Uncle KC had to show him the real deal. He got to shoot a real fire hose! However, notice that he's not quite paying attention. Why? You may ask. Well, because the mail truck came!
Which is how Ola got to see the inside of a mail truck. (I swear...only in the country will the mail lady hang out while your kid goes tromping through her truck. Gotta love it!)Right behind the Fire Station, there's also an ambulance bay, so Ola got to walk through the ambulance too. This was the best shot we could get after all the excitement. And four trucks later, this was the look on his face. He was such a happy little boy. We are so lucky to have such fabulous friends. Thank you Uncle KC for taking us on the grand tour and being so fabulous. Thank you Aunty Kyra for coming along and taking all the pictures. They are priceless and perfect shots!! And thank you Leeya for showing Ola how it's done. That girl had no fear around those trucks! ;)

And just another story....two days after our field trip, we had the following conversation at home:

Ola: "Bye Mom. Bye Dad."
Daddy: "Oh, bye Waiola. Where you going?"
Ola: "I going work."
Mommy: "You going work? Where you going work?"
Ola: "I going work. I going siren truck."
Mommy: "You're gonna go work on the fire truck? Are you gonna be a fireman?"
Ola: "Yep. I going fireman!" "Mom, where my keys?"
Mommy: "Your keys?" lol "Why do you need your keys?"
Ola: "I going work! I need my keys!"

Seriously, Mommy and Daddy couldn't stop laughing. It was just way too funny. But, who knows, maybe one day he'll be a fireman and we can say it all started when he was 2!
